Bee Yourself!

iBee Yourself This Year!

Welcome to the new year, IB! Since the beginning of the semester you’ve probably discussed or at least heard others making New Year’s resolutions. If so, you might know that the most common resolutions almost every year are to begin dieting and/or exercise more often. Though, that is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you have yet to make your resolutions but are a little hesitant to start going to the gym, here are a few suggestions!

1. Practice Self-Love.

You don’t have to follow a strict diet or go to the gym to love your body. At the root of many New Year’s resolutions, often including weight loss plans, is insecurity. Try finding a way to remind yourself every day that your body is beautiful to improve your confidence and self-esteem. One way to do this is by smiling at your reflection in the mirror each morning, associating your image with positivity.

2. Stop Procrastinating.

Many students at Lamar Academy would agree that procrastinating makes being a student very stressful. Yet, many of us procrastinate. Waiting until the last minute to complete an assignment can cause sleep deprivation, which is already an issue for high school students. Starting work early can help reduce stress and make a person feel more organized while also ensuring decent sleep! Easier said than done, though. One way to make this easier is by keeping a planner and personal schedule.

3. Get Some More Sleep.

Getting 8 hours of sleep is necessary in order to focus well in class and be in a good mood. If you make it a habit to sleep for 8 hours as often as you can, you could see long term benefits in your grades and in your relationships. Though many teenagers find it hard to fall asleep! One way to prevent this is by shutting off your phone a bit before bed, decreasing the amount of blue light (which inhibits the production of melatonin) you are exposed to.

4. Destress.

Take some time to let yourself breathe. This can be done in a few ways, such as meditation, watching a movie, drinking warm tea, listening to music, or reading a book you like. Doing just one of these things or something similar each week could improve your mood, especially if made a habit.

5. Volunteer.

Volunteering can make you feel connected to your community, providing a sense of belonging. It can also improve your social and networking skills. While volunteering is already a necessary part of CAS and MYP Service, finding organizations that you love and are passionate about would be a great thing to start doing this year.

5. Let Go of Grudges.

School isn’t free of drama, and while many of us would like to focus on academics, that is not always easy. However, letting go of hard feelings toward other classmates makes for a healthier atmosphere in IB, in which you can focus on what matters to you.

6. Spend Less Time on Social Media.

Social media addiction is a real problem among our generation, and it can be detrimental to our self esteem. If you find yourself scrolling through instagram feeling bored but still scrolling, take a break. Try to switch things up a little and you may find that you feel better.
