Colorado’s New Internet Roads of the Futures

In August of 2018, the Colorado Department of Transportation proposed to fund the first-ever commercial-scale road with very new technology. A technology that would greatly aid the driver, The Internet of Roads or the IoR, is a very futuristic project which utilizes Vehicle to Everything ( V2X), a form of wireless technology that warns drivers of approaching road issues and monitors traffic speed and car data (for example airbag deployment).

Throughout August and September, the Colorado Department of Transportation partnered up with Panasonic Office to test the new technology near the Denver International Airport. One $71.5 million partnership later, about 130 miles of IoR has been implemented into the roads around the Denver International Airport, and CDoT is currently discussing how to implement about 2,000 more miles of IoR into Colorado’s roads.

Overall, this new form of futuristic road technology is changing the way we drive for years to come. The new technology could potentially decrease the overall rate of vehicle accidents greatly and improve the response methods currently in place that aid vehicles on the road. Hopefully in the future more states will be able to access this kind of technology, allowing for safer roads for generations to come.
