Get to Know: Jane Cross

Updated: Oct 25, 2018

Jane “Juanita Cruz” Cross, a current runner for the position of Hidalgo County Judge was born on the third of July in 1956 in San Antonio, Texas. Adopted as a baby by LaVerne and Tom Cross she was raised in Edinburg, Texas in a loving Christian home. While not much information was found about her childhood, she did mention that “[her parents] told [her] that the sky was the limit, go for it!!” (Jane Cross: Biography).

Jane Cross’ education includes attending the University of Texas-Pan American University (now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and later transferring to Sam Houston State University where she graduated with a degree in communication and a minor in business. Cross also has a masters in communication studies and is a former educator, having taught at the University of Texas Pan American (now UTRGV) and South Texas College for about two decades.

In addition, Cross has served as president and board member of Edinburg’s Rotary for six plus years, is a member of International Women’s Board, Zonta International, helps with the Boys and Girls Club and Parks, and Rec Rotary Reading Room as she loves being involved in the community. Jane’s minor degree in business came in handy when she started Jane Cross Enterprises, Inc. around 2004. She also has two of her father’s companies which were started around the 1940’s.

Running for a political office had been on Cross’s mind before, at one point she considered running for the school board. Even though she lost, Cross had fun with the experience. Cross even ran for Congress and out of the 7 in the primary came in at about 3rd or 4th. Cross is now running for Hidalgo County Judge and stands for less taxes and less corruption. She puts the people first and wants only the best for them.

From a past debate held on the third of October of 2018 at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce between Jane Cross and Richard Cortez, Jane Cross stressed the importance of education, learning of a variety of skills, a concern for the well being of the people in the Valley and the county, and promised to work diligently as she constantly thinks about the students.
